Q. At what point in your life did you start to think things were not what they seemed?
A. I would say it was when I came back from my first tour overseas to Vietnam and the Navy. I had fought with my father; he was a World War II vet, as is my mother. . . . My father told me this Vietnam War is nothing more than somebody is making money, that’s all it is, nothing more. So when I came home from my first tour I was fortunate enough to be able to look at my dad and tell him he was right.
Q. As governor, did you uncover things in your own state that surprised you?
A. Yeah, I talked about it in my book Don’t Start the Revolution Without Me. I was astounded, and I didn’t say the name because I could get in trouble, but that the CIA is embedded in state government.
Q. Every state?
A. I can only assume that we’re not the exception, unless because I got elected? I don’t know. I mean, I can’t answer for the other 49. I can only assume that Minnesota is not the exception. Yet nobody even cared when I wrote that in the book.
Q. Do you think the president of the United States, whoever he is at any time, is kept in the dark about certain things?
A. I think the president is kept in the dark about certain things, just as a governor would be, too. There are certain things that are going on, that are in place, that they will let him know about if the need arises.
